Each participant to supply their own materials and work in their own medium of choice. You only need to purchase the medium you want to work in. Bring the following:
Own reference/s
Bring both black and white (for tonal value) and colour reference copies (for pigment hue / colour selection).
The Facilitator will also bring some references for use in exercises or should participant references not be suitable.
General
All participants will do some sketching. This will include thumbnail sketches and pre-painting drawings for testing composition and tonal values.
- Sketch Paper. A4+ Sketch (160g+)
- Paper
- Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B)
- Pencil sharpener / blade
- Kneadable eraser
- Stump
- Drawing and painting support (board, table easel, or free-standing easel)
Surfaces
Participants will choose own medium to use for their portraits. As such, participants must bring appropriate surfaces on which to work.
Choice of recommended surfaces to work on:
- Canvases / Primed Boards – 40cm x 50cm + as preferred (Oil / Acrylics).
- Papers – A4+ Sketch (160g+) and Watercolour (300g) as required (Sheet taped to board or use block pads). If using pastels or charcoal, select paper surface with ‘tooth’ and not a smooth surface paper.
Pigments and Tools
Participants will choose own medium to use for their portraits. As such, participants must bring appropriate pigments and tools with which to work.
Dry Mediums:
- Pencils – HB, 2B, 4B.
- Charcoal – Charcoal Powder, Charcoal Sticks (Willow / Vine) of different thicknesses.
- Pastels – Soft pastels, broad range of colours.
Wet Mediums:
- Basic Palette for Colour Representations – Ivory Black, Titanium White, for mixing neutrals and managing tonal values of primary pigments. Own choice of Reds (Cad Red Light) / Yellows (Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber) and Blues (Ultramarine) – Mix own colours as needed.
- Optional – Full Palette for Colour Representations – Ivory Black, Titanium White, for mixing neutrals and managing tonal values of primary pigments. Own choice of Reds (Cad Red Light, Cad Orange, Alizarin Crimson) / Yellows (Yellow Ochre, Burnt Umber, Burnt Sienna, Cad Yellow, Lemon Yellow) and Blues (Ultramarine, Cerulean, Viridian Green).
- Oils /Acrylics – Own brushes (long flats various sizes), soft blade Palette knives, drying and flow mediums for oils, rags, palettes, brush holder.
- Watercolours – Jars for water, palettes, paper towels, spray bottle, brushes.
