CLE3.1-05 Teaching in Connected and Online Classes – Educators not replaced by technology

Teaching is about more than delivering content. If this was true, television could have replaced teachers many decades back. We must see the current situation as one where anyone can get any content, anytime, from anywhere. Yet, that is not enough.

While individuals can be self-directed in their learning, and develop skills and understanding on their own in many scenarios, this requires a high level of “learning maturity”, and a diverse set of personal skills.

This video highlights the need for effective teaching in intentional (goal-directed) learning environments. Outcomes focused courses are offered to cohorts of learners from different backgrounds. An educator’s role is not to simply be a conduit for content. Understanding the learners position, and facilitating the learning process to realise intended outcomes requires far more that content delivery.

Time to Reflect

On your own journey with respect to adopting and infusing technology into your teaching practice, what drove or inhibited your sense of motivation? Think back to situations where you were expected to change but did not see value, or times when the task at hand seemed daunting.

In your teaching, are you aware of your learners sense of value and belief in their own ability to succeed. Are you aware of the learning skills gaps in your cohort of learners and are you driving them to resources where they can be assisted in closing those gaps? Are you adapting your teaching to give your learner cohort the best possible chance of realising the intended learning outcomes? Are you simply going through the motions of completing the syllabus or delivering the set of content in time?

Looking back at the TPACK framework, are you consciously reflecting on what you must keep doing, what you must stop doing, and what you must change?
