Exercise Objective

Effective use of Smartphone Camera and YouTube Applications to capture, edit, upload, share, and stream business supporting video content.

This exercise combines what has been learned during the earlier stages of the course. Delegates will make use of standalone and Internet-dependent applications in an integrated project:

  • Camera application to be used to record a video
  • Web Browser to be used to access Google (create account if needed)
  • Application Store is used to install applications (e.g. YouTube)
  • YouTube integration with Camera to upload videos
  • YouTube integration with email, WhatsApp, and Contacts to share video link

Participant Challenge(s)

  • Part 1
    • Plan a short video with guiding script
    • Record video using Smartphone Camera
    • Edit / retake as required
  • Part 2
    • Upload to personal YouTube Channel using YouTube Application and Google account login details
    • Set Channel / Video specific sharing rights as needed
    • Share video with team members as a group using WhatsApp
    • Open shared link and confirm viewers can access and view video
    • Change rights on video and review impact on viewers

Outcomes

  • Delegates will be able to:
    • Use their mobile phone as a video camera to record and edit a video
    • Login to YouTube (using a Google account or email address)
    • Upload a video from the mobile phone to their YouTube Channel
    • Control settings of their video sharing (i.e. public vs private)
    • Share a link to their video using email and WhatsApp

Exercise Steps

To complete this exercise, make sure each of the steps below are completed in order.

  1. Register on Google.com for an account / email. On Google.com – create a new account if needed. You will be asked to:
    • Enter name, date of birth, etc.
    • Enter / select a name to be used as your email (name@gmail.com) – use a name (that is available) that will be recognised by others and can be used in a professional business context
    • Choose a password
    • Enter mobile phone number to allow for recovery of account if password lost
    • Agree to terms and conditions of Google Account usage
  2. Record a Video
    • Use Camera on mobile phone to capture a short video.
  3. Sign into YouTube and upload videos
    • Using your Gmail (Google Account) credentials, log in to YouTube. Do this from a browser on your mobile phone, or using the YouTube Application if it is installed on your mobile phone.
    • Once signed into YouTube, upload videos and share them with others.
    • Once first upload is complete you will be asked to confirm and agree to terms and conditions of YouTube usage.
    • Before each upload takes place, you may have the opportunity to edit (e.g. trim lead-in and lead-out, adjust colours and light intensity, add music track, etc.).
  4. Share Videos
    • Once on your YouTube Channel, manage the privacy of your video and control who will be able to find and view your video.
    • Share your videos using a link. This is a YouTube generated URL that can be used as a hyperlink in emails, WhatsApp, documents, etc. If a recipient clicks on the hyperlink it will direct them to the video from their default browser.
    • Optional: You may include your video in a playlist should you have a group of videos that are of a common theme or interest area.
    • Optional: You can also embed you video in a page on a website or in a blog post you are managing.

Consider the data cost saving when wanting to share a video with multiple parties by using YouTube and only sharing a link to the video rather than the video itself.
